Reactionary Republicans don’t seem to be very good at many things. But, they seem to have a knack for making, pithy little sayings to capture some of the many, many hurtful grievances inflicted upon them. They are the perpetual victims of life, and enjoy creating special new terms to label their hurts and those who afflict them: Lamestream Media, Social Justice Warriors, Woke Justice. And now, one of their new favorites is: “cancel culture.”
Like the thinking behind it, the term is not very clear, but I guess it refers to a way of life in which a conservative person can be canceled out or deprived of something just because of their deeply held conservative beliefs. And the latest example of a Reactionary Conservative who has suffered (or whined about suffering) from cancel culture is Gina Carano.
Carano is the former mixed-martial arts fighter who played the role of Cara Dune on the Lucasfilms series, the Mandalorian. But she has been “canceled.”
A little more than a week ago her former employer issued a press release saying, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilms and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” Even her talent agency, UTA, has now refused to represent her.
Carano, being a Reactionary Conservative, had a predictable and self pitying reaction to share with the public. It had to do with being bullied by the big, bad studios: “I’ve been through so much, and I’ve seen so much now, clearly, of the bullying that’s been taking place, and I saw it before.” “I’m not the only one that’s ever been bullied by the company, and I know that so deeply.”
Gina Carano is a dense, self pitying, whiny little Reactionary Conservative. In being cut loose from Lucasfilms she got what she deserved, she got what she should have known that she deserved. She has no right to whine about it. Here’s what she obviously doesn’t understand.
-Gina, it’s not personal, it’s not ideological, it’s business.
Gina Carano was not cut loose from Lucasfilms, or from Disney, because of her political views. She was cut loose because she doesn’t understand that she was bad for business.
What is the business of Lucasfilms, and their distributor, The Walt Disney Co.? These companies are in the business of making major motion pictures that are family friendly and intended to be seen by a wide audience. Is there anyone in world who has not seen Disney’s Frozen about a dozen times? Or the original Star Wars about two dozen times. Theses are the two companies who have given us such loved and well known characters as Bambi and Thumper, Leia and Luke, Ariel and Snow White, Obi Wan and Yoda, and E.T. and Han.
Neither Lucasfilms nor The Walt Disney Co. wants to be associated with anything that is hateful, embarrassing, politically motivated or controversial. Did the kids from American Graffiti rant about politics or mock anyone (other than Terry the Toad, for being a nerd)? No. Did Belle talk smack about anyone’s religion or ethnicity? No, because Lucasfilms and Disney Co. wanted it that way.
Didn’t it occur to Carano that she would be courting unnecessary controversy by sending out tweets insulting transgender people, mocking them for the way they wanted to be addressed (Boop, Bop, Beep?!), and then trying lamely to backtrack on the very same insults?
Didn’t it occur to Carano that lying stupidly about controversial things would get you into trouble with your employer. For instance, sending out a tweet that demands we clean up our elections because of voter fraud only two days after Joe Biden won a decisive and very well documented election against Donald Trump is likely to make you look and sound like a politically motivated liar.
Didn’t it occur to Carano that one tweet about elections was bad enough but it was even worse to have a tweet that managed to question the truth about mail in voting and vaccines at the same time. Of course, responsible adults know that both mail in voting and vaccines are safe, reliable, and manage to get the job done. But both are hated and mocked by Reactionary Conservatives. Did she really think that these remarks would not be an unwanted reflection on her employer and her movies?
Whatever their politics may be Lucasfilms and The Walt Disney Co. don’t want to gratuitously alienate, offend, or outrage people. If they really wanted to do that they would make different movies for very different audiences.
I have never read a Lucasfilms or Disney employment contract, but I expect there is a standard clause that allows either company to fire someone whose speech or conduct is not consistent with the values and beliefs of either company.
Gina Carano seems to think that she had a special entitlement to her movie role. Lucasfilms and The Walt Disney Company are private companies operating in a free market economy. As such, Carano is what all laboring people are, an at-will employee. She could be, and was, fired at will for actions and words that her employer(s) thought were bad for them. She was not cancelled, she was not bullied, just fired.
-Gina, you’re not a victim, and you’re certainly not a victim of persecution - spare us, please!
Gina Carano feels that she was not only “cancelled” but persecuted for her political beliefs. But consider what it is that actually made Lucasfilms pull the trigger and cut her loose.
This is the tweet that actually got Gina Carano cut from any more work with Lucasfilms or Disney (catch the self styled grievance and suffering inherent in this little missive):
“Jews were beaten in the street, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors … even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”
This little confused and historically mangled version of history was intended to convince people that Gina Carano was unfairly fired and cruelly persecuted by some mob (a world that the “cancel culture” just loves), just for her political views. Just like the Jews in the 1930s.
But, like the vast majority of normal people, her employers thought it was an insanely stupid and self pitying idea that her suffering and the suffering of Jews in Nazi Germany were somehow related and equivalent to each.
The persecution and slaughter of the Jews in the Nazi era was and is the single most horrible and heinous act of violence against any group of human beings in history. Remember, it was both the ideology and policy of Adolf Hitler (and the entire Third Reich) that Jews were so evil, so degenerate and so dangerous that all of them had to be killed - all of them, everywhere, all the time, no exceptions. No good German could be safe unless ALL Jews were gone.
Does this sound as if it has anything to do with Gina Carano and her ugly tweets?
If you ain’t gone through what the Jews went through in Nazi Germany, you got no business comparing your misfortunes in life to what happened to them. There is no comparison and no equivalency. To try to do either only diminishes and lessens the unique pain, persecution and horror of what was inflicted on all Jewish people by the Nazis. This horror was unique, and it should always be remembered and treated as such so that nothing minimizes it to the point that it is forgotten or it seems that it was reasonable to have happened.
-Let’s see if you are going to be a hypocrite about firing people.
Gina Carano has just announced an agreement with Ben Shapiro, of the right-wing website Daily Wire, to develop, produce, and star in an upcoming film.
She is obviously grateful for the opportunity to make the movie and has very high expectations about it:
“The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams —- to develop and produce my own film —- come true,” … I cried out and my prayer was answered.”
And she makes clear her defiance of those who would “cancel” her, “I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”
So … tell me Gina, and Ben: if someone in your movie starts tweeting that people are stupid for thinking that there was voter fraud and that Donald Trump actually won the election; if anyone in the movie says that insulting Jews or trans people is abhorrent; if someone says that a person who reads the Daily Wire is a stupid fascist, what are you going to do? Are you going to allow them to say things you believe to be wrong? Are you going to ignore the screams and howls of The Daily Wire subscribers? Are you?
No. You’re going to “cancel” them. Or Ben will. Or Dallas Sonnier will.
Either way, when it is your movie, your money, your name, or your reputation, you will exercise your right to “cancel” that person for his/her personal views.
