Progressive Views: Things for Joe Biden to Say at the Start, Part II

Justice must not only be done but it must be seen to be done. In the same way, Biden, and the Democrats, are not only different from Donald Trump and his reactionary Republican supporters but must be seen as to be different. And the best way to do this is by Biden telling America how his way of doing things will be different (and better) than Trump’s ways.

To that end I think that Biden should continue to differentiate himself from Trump by announcing and then doing these things:

-I, Joe Biden, in an effort to produce good government and good national policies, will respect science and learning.

Donald Trump has always disdained learning in general and science in particular. This has been obvious from his his entire tenure in handling the coronavirus crisis. Ignorant of history and even basic biology he has falsely, and stupidly, proclaimed that the coronavirus was a hoax, and that it would naturally go away on its own. He called it the “Chinese Virus” because he believed that it was actually made in a Chinese laboratory (no human being has ever come close to creating a virus). He promoted unfounded, even crackpot ideas (hydroxychloroquine as a cure for the virus, herd immunity by process of elimination of the vulnerable), ignored the advice of experienced scientist (Fauci, Brix) and even embraced the advice of people who know nothing about infectious diseases (yeah you, Scott Atlas).

Trump’s lack of respect for learning extends way beyond just mishandling the coronavirus. He withdrew the United States from the International Climate Agreement because he thinks that climate change is a hoax (unlike everyone in the world who is not a reactionary American Republican). He even nominated Betsy Devos to be Secretary of Education, even though she is totally ignorant of teaching and has never spent one day in front of a class.

I believe that Biden respects learning and science. But I want him to say so - at the start of his administration and all during the years of his presidency. He can start by bringing back Fauci front and center to routinely update and explain to the American people things about the coronavirus and the new vaccines.

Biden should do the same with recognized experts for every important policy he tries to turn into legislation (hopefully very helpful in garnering support to use against Mr. Death, Mitch McConnell).

Perhaps it would help if Biden explained his faith in using experts this way, “If it was the big game, we would listen to the coach; if it was war, we would listen to the general; if it was an operation, we would listen to the surgeon. We have got a pandemic going on here. We got people with brains to handle this and I’m going to use them!”

-I, Joe Biden, in an effort to reassert America’s traditional role of world leader, will make a concerted effort to repair relations with our long time allies and friends.

This is an easy one: Trump has consciously and repeatedly mocked, ridiculed, abused and alienated most of our traditional allies and friends. Trump has insulted Theresa May when she was Prime Minister of Great Britain. He has been harshly rude to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, accused (wrongly and stupidly) leaders of all NATO countries of being deadbeats who don’t pay their NATO joint defense security service bills to America. He even was even stupid and insulting enough to place tariffs on imports of Canadian aluminum by citing the little used and wholly inapplicable 232 section of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (this allows the president to declare certain imports a threat to America on national security grounds and place tariffs on them. And of course, everyone knows that Canada is a vicious enemy that routinely uses its exports of aluminum to destroy America).

Instead of cozying up to foreign leader thugs (like Vladimir Putin) Biden should immediately reach out and contact our allies to make sure that not only will America respect its traditional allies but will reassert its traditional role of world leader (not world thug or international tough guy).

I would also like Biden to remind Americans how important it is that the American President take the lead in creating harmony and cooperation with foreign leaders. Almost every truly pressing national problem requires an international effort: stopping the coronavirus pandemic, containing the economic threat of China, halting climate change and global warming.

Whether or not Joe Biden is your choice for the perfect president, or the perfect progressive, he is world’s away from Donald Trump in every important respect. And he can’t be shy about telling America how he will be different from Trump - and all of those who have supported, enabled or apologized for him.

Go, Joe! Go big! Go progressive!
